“ Do Speed/ Play Controller have an effect on learning efficiency for students in VOD-based learning environment? ”

Overview

During the Covid-19 pandemic, many universities relied on video lectures as a means of remote instruction. To determine whether giving students the ability to control the speed or playback of these videos would enhance their learning efficiency, we developed three hypotheses based on preliminary research and designed a study to test them.

1. Hypotheses

H1: Speed up/down and Play back/forward features have a positive effect on learning efficiency
H2: Speed up/down and Play back/forward features have a positive effect on Perceived Control
H3: Speed up/down and Play back/forward features have a positive effect on learning efficiency through a mediator of Perceived Control

2. Research Design

① Recruiting
Participants Screener
  • 100 male/ female university students aged 20 to 29
  • Screen participants with relevant knowledge about the stimulus → exclude people who scored more than 7(/10) on the quiz
② Exposure to the stimulus for 1 hr
Stimulus
  • 1hr lecture about Blockchain
Speed and play controller
  • No limits for the amount of usage
  • Speed Controller Setting
    : 0.25x - 2.0x at intervals of 0.25x
  • Play Controller Setting
: Keyboard & mouse can be used
    - keyboard setting
: left (10 secs backward) & right (10 secs forward)
Allocation
  • Randomisation
Moderator variable Control
  • Prev. Knowledge: screened in recruiting
  • Motivation to learn
: giving a reward for the quiz result
  • Exposure time : control all to 1.5 hr
  • Learning ability
: survey K-SAT score, considering it in data analysis

③ Quiz to check the degree of understanding
Learning Effect
  • Dependent variable
  • Quiz results is a pointer to the degree of understanding
④ Perceived Control Questionnaire
Perceived Control
  • Mediator variable
  • Questionnaire from the study of Mayers and Chandler(2001)
⑤ Wrap-up Survey
Demography
  • Demography and K-SAT Score

3. Limitation

1. Uncontrollable Moderator and Mediator
2. Other Mediators
